Linus
Baumgärtner.

M.Sc. Data and Computer Science. My work spans streaming graph algorithms, backend systems, and Android apps — somewhere between research and shipping.

I recently completed my master's at Heidelberg University, specializing in algorithm engineering — the practical side of algorithms, where theoretical bounds meet cache lines, memory budgets, and real input data. My thesis on streaming graph partitioning is being published at SEA 2026.

Before that I built backend microservices for a LoRaWAN network operator at ZENNER Hessware, and GUIs for high-frequency surgical devices at KLS Martin. I also publish Mars Launcher, a minimalist Android launcher, on the Play Store and tinker with side projects when an idea won't let go.

I'm currently looking for remote freelance or part-time work (15–20 hrs/week) — backend, algorithms, mobile, or anywhere those overlap.

BuffCut: Prioritized Buffered Streaming Graph Partitioning

L. Baumgärtner, A. Chhabra, M. F. Faraj, C. Schulz

A streaming graph partitioner that holds up under adversarial input orders. Introduces a bucket-based priority queue with O(1) operations driven by a novel buffer score, keeping per-batch decisions cheap under tight memory limits, and parallelizes the construction for additional throughput. Master's thesis, grade 1.0.

Mars Launcher

Text-based UI, gesture controls, weather and calendar integration, published on the Google Play Store. Native Android bridge via Method Channels for app management and system events. My daily driver for three years. I keep adding what I find myself wishing it had.

PicOff

Native Android (Kotlin, MVVM): users send each other photo challenges and respond with whatever the situation allows. Backed by Firebase Realtime Database, Authentication, and Storage. Built as a quick prototype, ended up being surprisingly fun in practice.

Effective Geo

A small Android app for learning country capitals. Browse all countries with their flags and population, then test yourself with flashcards. Spaced repetition via SuperMemo-2, the algorithm behind Anki, keeps reviews focused on what you haven't mastered yet.
